About Us

We are dedicated to encouraging and promoting the keeping, breeding and exhibition of quality chinchillas.

The National Chinchilla Society was originally formed in the 1950s. Its members were responsible in the UK for the importation, breeding and development of the Chinchilla into the well known and beloved animal many people own today. Whether you are a non-breeding pet owner, a breeder for fun or a breeder aiming to improve the chinchilla, we have something for you!

We hold chinchilla shows throughout the UK during the showing season of September to April. Although you have to be a member to exhibit, everyone is welcome to attend our shows (entry is free). As well as seeing the beautiful chinchillas, the shows are great social events and are an opportunity to talk chinchillas with experienced breeders and other owners.

The Society publishes five gazettes per year. These are included in the price of the membership fee. The Gazette contains details of forthcoming shows and events, the results of the shows along with the Judges reports, plus lots of interesting articles on husbandry and care, NCS news and show preparation.

Members can write in and inform each other of new ideas or developments and ask or answer each others questions. There are informative articles on Chinchilla keeping, breeding, health and showing from various points of view. Also included are handy tips and helpful hints, plus lots of other items that go towards producing an unsurpassed wealth of knowledge about chinchillas.
